Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between EAN and UPC?

EAN-13 is the international standard (13 digits) used in Europe, Asia, and most countries worldwide. UPC-A is the North American standard (12 digits) used in the US and Canada. Both are compatible with modern scanners—a UPC can be converted to EAN by adding a leading zero.

Do I need to register my barcode numbers?

For retail sales, yes. Barcode numbers must be obtained from GS1 (the global standards organization) to ensure uniqueness. Our tool generates the barcode image from your number, but the number itself should be registered with GS1 for commercial retail use.

Why won't my barcode scan?

Common issues include: insufficient contrast (use black bars on white background), printing too small (minimum 80% of standard size), or blurry printing. Ensure your printer produces crisp edges and test with multiple scanners before mass printing.

What size should I print my barcode?

The standard size for EAN-13 is 37.29mm × 26.26mm. For UPC-A, it's 37.29mm × 25.91mm. You can scale between 80% and 200% of these sizes. Smaller than 80% may cause scanning issues; larger is always safer.

Can I use colors in my barcode?

While technically possible, we strongly recommend black bars on a white background for maximum scanner compatibility. If you must use colors, ensure high contrast—dark bars on light backgrounds. Avoid red bars as many scanners use red light.

What file format should I use?

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is ideal for printing as it maintains perfect sharpness at any size. For web use or basic applications, PNG works well. Our tool generates print-ready SVG files by default.
